‘Democratiser of the skies’, budget airline’s Herb Kelleher, dies
Pioneer of low-fare flights, Southwest Airlines founder paved the way for Ryanair
Herb Kelleher, the founder of Soutwest Airlines and pioneer of low-cost aviation, “without whom there would be no Ryanair”, has died aged 87.
Kelleher set up his budget carrier in Texas more than 50 years ago and changed the face of flying, stripping back costs and inflight services, opening up air travel to a wider range of people.
