Disney Plus streaming site will not offer ‘racist’ Song of the South film
Hit from 1946 now criticised for portrayal of African-Americans in post-slavery period
When Disney’s streaming site launches in the US in November this year, fans will be able to watch Star Wars spin-off series The Mandalorian and classic films – but there will be a notable absence. The 1946 film Song of the South, which has long been a controversial title for Disney because of its depiction of the lives of African-American plantation workers in the southern states after the civil war, will not be included.
The company has no plans to include Song of the South in its Disney Plus package, and has also decided to cut a scene from Dumbo that is considered racist.
