BREAKING: Authorities in Allen, Texas confirm that nine people have died in a mass shooting at an outlet mall in the small Texas city – seven at the scene, and two of nine that had been transported by ambulance to emergency medical facilities. The gunman was shot and killed by a police officer.
Per the NY Times:
At a news conference Saturday night, Brian E. Harvey, the chief of police in Allen, Texas, said a motive was unknown and did not identify the gunman but said the person acted alone.
The ages of the injured ranged from 5 to 61.
The gunfire erupted on a busy Saturday afternoon at the Allen Premium Outlets around 3:30 p.m. as throngs of shoppers filled the outdoor mall, which is about 25 miles north of Dallas and has more than 120 stores. Videos circulating on social media show people dashing for shelter or running through a parking lot as loud popping noises can be heard in the background.
Chief Harvey said a police officer, who was on an unrelated assignment at the outlets at the time of the shooting, heard gunfire, rushed toward it and killed the gunman.
Guardian reports:
“He pretty much was walking down the sidewalk just … shooting his gun outside,” a witness told the station. “He was just shooting his gun everywhere for the most part.” … Blood could be seen on sidewalks outside the mall and white sheets covering what appeared to be bodies. At least one cellphone video taken by someone outside the mall and circulated on social media showed what appeared to be multiple dead people.
