Peloton responded on Tuesday to angry customers who were surprised to see their $4,000 Tread+ treadmills now required a $39 per month membership to use.

The problem arose when the company rolled out an update last week in response to design concerns with its product that led to the death of a child.

"We created Tread Lock to secure your Tread+ against unauthorized access," the company said in an email to customers that one owner shared with Insider. "Unfortunately at this time, 'Just Run' is no longer available without a Peloton Membership."

The spokesperson told Insider that Peloton is "working on updates" to its Tread Lock that would allow users to continue to use the "Just Run" mode, and the company is waiving three months of fees for All-Access memberships for all Tread+ owners.

Some owners have threatened legal action over the move, but the company declined to comment on the threats or allegations around breach of contract.

"What I'm concerned about is the potential for a company to essentially brick your device if you are unable to afford or simply not interested in the content subscription anymore," said Taylor Dondich, who owns both a Peloton bike and treadmill.
