Police arrest man they say ordered shooting of Red Sox legend David Ortiz
- Former baseball player still recovering in hospital
- Ortiz shot in what police say was case of mistaken identity
- Police say actual target was cousin of alleged member of cartel
Authorities in the Dominican Republic announced on Friday that they have arrested the man behind the shooting of Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz in an apparent case of mistaken identity. Police named the man they have detained as Victor Hugo Gomez. No further details were immediately released.
Authorities had said last week that they believed Gomez was living in the US and described him as a dangerous fugitive, adding that he was an associate of Mexico’s Gulf Cartel. He is accused of ordering the killing of his cousin, Sixto David Fernandez. Authorities say hit men confused Ortiz with Fernandez during the 9 June shooting at a bar in the capital of Santo Domingo. The two men are friends and were sharing a table.
